2022 Census by regions

With 84,8 million inhabitants, the Southeast Region remained the most populous. The total number of inhabitants is equivalent to 41,8% of the country's population. Next are the Northeast (26,9%), South (14,7%) and North (8,5%). The least populated region is the Central-West, with 16,3 million inhabitants or 8,02% of the country's population.

If we take into account the comparison of the 2010 and 2022 demographic censuses, annual population growth did not occur uniformly across major regions. Although it is less populous, the Midwest recorded greater growth, resulting in an average rate of 1,2% per year over the last 12 years. The lowest population growth was in the Northeast and Southeast. The rate is lower than the Brazilian average of 0,52% per year.

São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro are the three most populous states in the country and account for 39,9% of the population. Despite being the least populous, the state with the highest population growth was Roraima, where the average annual growth rate reached 2,92% in the period, the only one to surpass the 2% mark per year.

The country's demographic density in the last census survey was estimated at 23,8 inhabitants per square kilometer (km²). According to the IBGE, this number remains unequal between regions. “In the North, which has an area of 3 km², or 850% of the country's territory, the density is 593 inhabitants/km². In the most populous region, the Southeast, the average is 45,2 inhabitants per square kilometer”, reported the agency.
