China sends UN delegates to reestablish the 'truth' about Xinjiang and the Uyghurs

China sent several officials from Xinjiang to Geneva to meet with a United Nations (UN) representative. The meeting, held at the request of the Chinese government, aimed to clarify, in front of the press, what the Asian government says is "the truth" about what is happening in that province. Beijing is accused of committing crimes against humanity in Xinjiang.

The long exhibition lasting more than two hours was held in the small press room of the UN headquarters.

On the podium were five representatives from Xinjiang, including Xu Guixiang – director of information for this region – an imam and a university official, to almost line-by-line contradict the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet.

The report accuses China of persecuting minorities in Xinjiang, particularly the Uighurs.

“In the face of the false ideas in the (UN, NDR) report, we want to restore the truth and clarify the facts,” Xu said, opening what was presented as a press conference, although journalists were allowed to ask only four questions.

Several years ago, China was accused by material evidence and documents from Western countries and human rights organizations of having imprisoned more than a million Uyghurs and other members of Muslim minorities, including Kazakhs, in camps in Xinjiang.

Relations between China and the UN have been affected since Michelle Bachelet published her report, minutes before the end of her term.
