How #BookTok became a place for book fans on TikTok

The presence of literary content on TikTok, an application that is theoretically unlikely when it comes to literature, is increasing. The hashtag #BookTok has numerous publications on the social network due to the large number of readers who publish their reviews - which has encouraged many young people to give books a chance.

For some, a platform known for its videos may seem strange. curtos, with visual effects or music, encourage reading, an activity that requires a certain degree of concentration. However, the application has become an effective format for presenting users' favorite works and, in some cases, increasing the books' popularity.

Due to its growing influence, for the first time the Frankfurt Book Fair, the largest event in the world dedicated to literature, made TikTok one of its partners.

The trend “is super important to me,” says Sarah Sprinz, author of the bestselling book “Dunbridge Academy,” set at a boarding school in Scotland.

“I think it contributed to my success, because I saw a lot of videos that recommended my books”, commented the writer in an interview with AFP during the fair.

Sprinz, 26, believes that TikTok offers a particularly suitable channel for attracting new audiences and fostering the pleasure of reading among younger people.

“Impact on book sales”

According to TikTok, an application from ByteDance, based in China, the #BookTok accumulates more than 84 billion views.

The platform has become “a place where books are recommended and discovered, but also where reviews are shared or fan culture is explored,” explains Tobias Henning, the app's director for Germany, Eastern and Western Europe.

And that “has a real impact on book sales around the world,” notes Henning.
