US Congress passes law protecting same-sex marriage

The United States House of Representatives approved, this Thursday (8), a historic bill that protects same-sex marriage. This precautionary measure aims to prevent the Supreme Court, led by conservatives, from suspending this right across the country, as it did with abortion. The bill is expected to be signed into law by President Joe Biden.

The Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, annulled the right to abortion, in force since 1973. Because of this, legislators from both parties acted quickly to prevent a similar measure with the same-sex marriage, as some feared might happen.

Biden considers marriage equality one of his legislative priorities and has said he will “swiftly and proudly” sign the bill into law.

The new legislation, known as Law of Respect for Marriage, does not require states to legalize same-sex marriage, but rather to recognize the marriage as long as it is valid in the state in which it took place.

The new law repeals previous legislation, which defined marriage as the union between a man and a woman, and also protects interracial couples by requiring states to recognize legal marriages without distinction of “sex, race, ethnicity or national origin ”.

In a 2015 ruling, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage. Since then, hundreds of thousands of homosexual couples have married.
