Dentistry Council calls for suspension of new courses

The increase in the number of Dentistry courses has worried the Federal Council of the class. Since 2017, the offer has increased from 220 to 412 across the country.

The Federal Council of Dentistry (CFO) filed a lawsuit asking for the suspension of new undergraduate courses for training dentists and the expansion of vacancies offered for a period of five years. The council is concerned about the quality of teaching, as the number of courses has almost doubled in five years.

The CFO's public civil action was filed last Monday (26) in the Federal Court of the Federal District. Estadão had access to the documents and the entity cites the freezing of places on Medicine courses, approved a few years ago. The entities that represent the colleges protest and will try to resolve the issue in court.

According to the report, the Ministry of Education (MEC) was contacted, but had not yet commented on the matter.

INCREASED

Between 2015 and 2019, the number of educational institutions offering Dentistry courses grew by 87%, going from 220 to 412 courses. Given this scenario, Vale states that, since 2017, the dentists' council has sent letters to the Ministry of Education, requesting the suspension of authorizations or “a more careful evaluation”. The returns, however, were unsatisfactory, which led the council to go to court. “At a certain point, the MEC issued an ordinance suspending authorizations for new Medicine courses, and Dentistry courses continued to be authorized,” he said, referring to the 2018 decision.
