Against attacks on press freedom, 12 civil society institutions carry out an act for democracy at PUC-SP

The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji) and 12 other organizations are carrying out an act this Tuesday (27) in defense of press professionals and democracy. The event is a response to the escalation of threats, aggressions, physical and virtual attacks and attempts at censorship and intimidation against journalists. According to Abraji monitoring, there were 353 attacks in 2022, an increase of 12% compared to the same period in 2021 (453 attacks).

O Act in Defense of Journalism and Democracy, which brings together organizations that fight for press freedom and human rights, will present recent data on violence against journalists and the challenges faced by professionals in Brazil.

During the event – ​​which takes place from 19pm (Brasília time), at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). – will also be published a manifesto in defense of the free exercise of journalism and democracy.

The meeting will be attended by Patricia Campos Mello, reporter for Folha de S.Paulo and director of Abraji, and journalist and writer Bianca Santana. They are among the victims of aggressions and attacks carried out by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and his supporters and will share their stories with the participants.

The event will also feature the presence of civil society organizations in defense of human rights, such as OAB (Brazilian Bar Association), Prerogatives Group, Torture Never Again Group and Justice and Peace Commission, Condepe (State Council for the Defense of Human Rights), in addition to having the support and partnership of the PUC-SP Journalism Course.
