Violence against voters increased by 40% in the 2nd round, says Amnesty International

This Saturday (29), the NGO Amnesty International released a mapping that identified, between the 2nd and 26th of October, 59 cases of violence and threats against voters in 20 of the 26 Brazilian states. The sum of occurrences represents a 40% increase in relation to what was mapped during the first round. Almost 20% of the situations occurred precisely on the day voters left home to vote. In addition to the intensification of violence, the "exponential increase in reports of electoral harassment" are also worrying, said Amnesty International's director for the Americas, Erika Rosas.

The cases were mapped by Amnesty International in the document “Intimidation as a method – violence and threats against voters in 2022”.

Of the 59 situations identified, 11 concerned offense, threat, aggression or intimidation with the use of weapons. 7 of the cases involved threats, all directed at people identified with the candidate Lula (PT). 5 of them involved reports of persecution or physical aggression – including journalists, a state deputy, and supporters of the PT candidate.

In São Paulo, on October 5th, a murder took place in the clash of friends who supported opposing presidential candidates.

In Rondônia, they were mapped cases of indigenous people victims of intense hostility by reproducing lies associated with the electoral context.

“The cases are of interruption of religious ceremonies, intimidation of religious leaders, isolation of religious leaders within congregations, virtual attacks and offenses and boycott of services – all within Christian, Catholic, Pentecostal and neo-Pentecostal churches of different denominations, incited by authorities and religious leaders, and by the faithful themselves. The attacks are aimed at removing speeches defending human rights, criticizing violence and the use of weapons, defending the rights of minority groups (black people, LGBTQIA+, etc.), defense of religious freedom and individual freedoms, among others. And, they also aim to convince believers to vote for candidate Jair Bolsonaro”.

Political violence is the keynote of the 2022 elections

At the beginning of October, the NGOs Justiça Global and Terra de Direito released a report that estimated that, in the two months leading up to the day of the first round of elections, the Brazil had two cases of political violence per day.
