Creator of ChatGPT says it wants to continue operating in Europe

Sam Altman, owner of OpenAI and creator of ChatGPT, said this Friday (26) that it wants to continue operating in Europe, after threatening to leave the European Union (EU) on Wednesday if regulations become too strict.

“Very productive week of negotiations in Europe on the best way to regulate artificial intelligence. We are happy to continue operating here and clearly have no intention of leaving,” he wrote on Twitter.

Altman had warned on Wednesday in London, on the tenth stage of his trip across five continents, that OpenAI could “cease to operate” in the EU if the bloc's future regulations, currently being drafted, impose too many limitations on it.

“We will try (to adapt), but there are technical limitations as to what is possible,” he told the British press.

The statements did not please European Commissioner Thierry Breton, responsible for digital affairs, who on Thursday described them as an attempt at “blackmail” and stated that the aim of the regulation is to “help companies” with the deployment of intelligence.

Altman will have a chance to calm things down at a conference this Friday at Station F, a start-up hub in Paris.

The American's intervention is part of his trip around the world to reassure about the implications of artificial intelligence and defend regulation that is not too restrictive for his business.

The generative artificial intelligence of OpenAI, opened to the general public at the end of 2022, generated an avalanche of fears about its possible use for disinformation, job destruction and copyright theft.
