Resignation requests deepen crisis in Boris Johnson's government

Dozens of members of Boris Johnson's government, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, resigned this week. On Tuesday (5), it was the turn of Health Ministers, Sajid Javid, and Finance Ministers, Rishi Sunak, to announce that they are leaving their positions.

The disbandment comes after recent allegations of sexual misconduct by former secretary Chris Pincher. He left office last Thursday (30) after being accused of groping two guests at a private dinner. The British Prime Minister admitted to having appointed Pincher to the position even after being informed in 2019 of other allegations of misconduct.

🇬🇧 Johnson’s controversies in government

The most prominent scandal during Boris Johnson's government is the so-called “partygate”, which concerns parties organized at the Prime Minister's office and official residence during the restriction measures against Covid-19, in 2020 and 2021.

Other criticisms of Johnson involve his de facto management. In his letter of resignation from office, Finance Minister Rishi Sunak said the public expects the government to be run “properly, competently and seriously”.

On June 6 of this year, Johnson faced a vote of no confidence triggered by members of the Conservative Party, his own party. He received 211 votes to remain in office and 148 to leave it. Even though he maintained his position in the government, the vote further deepened the already existing crisis.
