PM Summit arrested in Brasília for 'omission' in the acts of January 8

Members of the Brasília Military Police leadership were arrested this Friday (18) as part of an investigation into their alleged omission of the January 8 attacks on the headquarters of the Three Powers, reported the Attorney General's Office (PGR).

The evidence, gathered in eight months of investigation, points to an “omission” on the part of the Military Police authorities of the Federal District, which showed a “deep ideological contamination”, said the PGR in a statement.

There is evidence that “the agents – who held commanding positions in the corporation – received, before January 8, 2023, various intelligence information that indicated the coup intentions of the movement and the imminent risk of an effective invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers” , he added.

The Prosecutor's Office did not detail the names of the authorities arrested this Friday. According to the local press, the list includes the current commander of the Military Police and the officer who presided over the institution at the time of the invasion.

The entity, which requested the indictment of those being investigated, identified a “deep ideological contamination on the part of the officers of the DF Military Police who showed support for conspiracy theories about electoral fraud and coup theories”.

Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) lost re-election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in October last year, by a narrow margin.

After the defeat, Bolsonaro groups, convinced that their leader had been a victim of fraud, organized roadblocks and demonstrations calling for military intervention.

On January 8, a week after Lula's inauguration, thousands of Bolsonaro's supporters invaded and looted the headquarters of the Three Powers, in Brasília.

The episode shook Brazilian democracy and triggered a broad investigation that has already culminated in hundreds of arrests.

Bolsonaro, who was recently convicted by the Electoral Court and will not be able to run in the next presidential elections for having publicly attacked the Brazilian electoral system, is being investigated for his participation in these attacks.

He denies any connection with what happened.

Bolsonaro and his entourage face several judicial investigations, including one into the alleged diversion of jewelry and other gifts from the State for personal enrichment, and the falsification of vaccination certificates against Covid-19 to enter the United States.
