In the National Congress, parliamentarians do not just act individually. To have greater influence, they come together in groups and blocs to “play” the game of national politics. One of the most famous – and strongest – groups is the so-called center.

He is basically a group made up of 170 to 220 deputies (according to estimates) from different parties – which moves between the right and the left – and come together to achieve greater influence in parliament and jointly defend their interests.
Currently, the center is made up of parliamentarians from PP (40 deputies), Republicans (31) Solidarity (14) and PTB (12). This would be the “official Center”, but, at certain times, the PSD (36 deputies), MDB (34) DEM (28) PROS (10) PSC (9) Onwards (7) and Patriot (6) (Politicize!)
Most of these parties do not have a clear ideological role, with members willing to negotiate support for the Executive in exchange for positions in public administration.

O center is closely associated with “old policy“, or to physiologism, that is: it doesn’t matter how or who, party X and ideology Y, they do everything to have power.
In fact, with this “bad” association, there are parliamentarians who do not like to be classified as “from the Centrão”, and call themselves “independent”, outside the opposition and the government base.
Shall we remember some names from this group?
- Arthur Lira (PP-AL)
- Valdemar da Costa Neto (PL)
- Roberto Jefferson (PTB)
O center is a term often used in the media, but it is worth remembering that it is an informal bloc in the Brazilian Congress.
