Unemployment in Brazil falls to 8% in the second quarter

Brazil recorded a drop in the unemployment rate to 8,0% in the April-June quarter, the lowest level in this period in nine years, according to official data released this Friday (28).

The rate fell compared to the first quarter of the year, which registered 8,8%, reported the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The index fell even further compared to the April-June period last year, when it was 9,3%.

With 8,6 million unemployed in the country, the second quarter index is the lowest for these months since 2014, when it was 6,9%.

The drop in unemployment “points to a recovery of the seasonal pattern of this indicator”, said Adriana Beringuy, coordinator of the IBGE survey, cited in a note.

The analyst highlighted the increase in workers in public administration, defense, social security, education, health and social services during the last quarter and this year.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva assumed a third term in January -after two consecutive presidencies between 2003 and 2010- with the challenge of increasing jobs and overcoming a long period of high inflation (which continued to fall in June and reached 3,16, 12%, in XNUMX months), amid expectations of weak economic growth.

Lula attributes the difficulties in the job market to the high level of interest rates (13,75%) from the Central Bank, due to its slowing effect on the economy, the largest in Latin America.
