Unemployment in Brazil drops to 8,3% between March and May

Unemployment fell in Brazil to 8,3% between March and May, a reduction of 0,3 percentage points compared to the previous three months, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported this Friday (30).

This is the lowest rate for this period since 2015, when a similar level was recorded, indicated the IBGE in a note.

Between December and February, this index was 8,6%, according to official data. However, the drop was 1,5 percentage points compared to 9,8% recorded between March and May 2022.

The number of people without jobs fell back to 8,9 million in this period, around 279.000 or 3%, compared to the previous quarter. In the same period last year, this rate was 15,9% or 1,7 million fewer unemployed people.

However, “this decline in the quarter was more influenced by the drop in the number of people looking for work than by a significant increase in workers”, explained Adriana Beringuy, coordinator of the research, in a note from the official institute.

“It was the lower pressure on the job market that caused the reduction in the unemployment rate,” he added.

Therefore, there was no significant creation of jobs in the period: the number of people employed, around 98,4 million, remained stable compared to the previous quarter, and grew 0,9% compared to the same months in 2022.

The population's search for employment impacts the rate, as those who do not do so are not counted as unemployed in the statistics.

The public sector was the one that generated the most jobs, with an increase of 2,8% in the March-May quarter. The agricultural sector reduced the number of workers by 1,9%.

Workers' income, however, remained stable at 2.901 reais, compared to the previous quarter.
