Deforestation in Brazil grows 20% in 2021, according to MapBiomas report

Deforestation in the country increased by 20% in 2021, according to the Annual Report on Deforestation in Brazil (RAD), by MapBiomas. Data from the study indicate that the country lost 16.557 km² of native vegetation cover in all biomes.

Of the total area deforested in Brazil last year, 59% of cases occurred in the Amazon. The rate of forest felling in the region was 1,9 hectares per minute. This equates to approximately 18 trees per second.

Next, the Cerrado and Caatinga were the most deforested biomes. In the Pantanal, there was a 50,5% increase in alerts and a 15,7% increase in the deforested area compared to 2020.

Considering the area lost in the last three years, it is estimated that Brazil lost almost a state of Rio de Janeiro of native vegetation during the Bolsonaro government. It's too much.

In the same period, indigenous lands were the only land category that did not suffer an increase in deforestation. According to MapBiomas, this reinforces the importance of these territories for environmental preservation.

And guess which activities are responsible for driving deforestation… Yes, agriculture comes first, with rates above 96%. The RAD revealed that mining, mining, urban expansion and other activities also contribute to the increase in deforestation.
