National Adoption Day: around 5 thousand children and teenagers wait for a home in Brazil

Data from the National Adoption Registry show that Brazil has around 5 thousand children and adolescents waiting for a family. The number seems even more frightening when looking at the data on suitors: there are more than 38 thousand people wanting to adopt a child. The account doesn't close, right? This is because most children deprived of family power and ready for adoption are over 7 years old. And the desire to have a child is still focused on babies.

Institutions linked to Justice are running campaigns on this National Adoption Day, especially to demystify adoption and break patterns, encouraging late adoption: children over 7 years old also need a home and affection!

The São Paulo Court of Justice created the “Adopt a good night” campaign. Because when receiving a good night, children and teenagers know that they will never be alone…

The National Council of Justice invites, via social media, participation in a tweet for adoption:

“Active Search” project for adoption

The CNJ also publicizes the “Active Search” project, used by courts nationally, which indicates children who are “difficult to place” in families, either because they are older, or because they have an illness and because they are part of groups of siblings.

Through the tool, qualified suitors have access to information, photos and videos of available boys and girls. From 2019 to date, 312 children have been adopted through active search.

System has helped increase adoption of older children and adolescents

According to the Project Director of the Department of Judicial Research (DPJ/CNJ) and member of the SNA Steering Committee, Isabely Mota, the numbers of this type of adoption are growing: as of May, 78 children and adolescents found new families through the device. In 2022, there were 173 adoption processes carried out using the resource, while in 2019, only two children were adopted in this way.

“The national Active Search tool complements the systems that already exist in several courts in the country. More than 130 children are already in the attachment stage, getting to know their families; and more than 220 are in the adoption process via active search. This shows that the resources have borne fruit, but it is necessary to work in a network to protect children's rights”, says Isabely Mota.

Through the system, people already qualified for adoption in the National Adoption and Reception System (SNA), they can see descriptions, check photos and videos of children and teenagers who need a home, with emphasis on groups of siblings, children over 8 years old or with health problems of any age.

The process follows strict rules to protect the identity and image of children and adolescents, such as 0 images accompanied by the CNJ watermark, and the CPF of those who accessed them is recorded. This care is important to ensure that images are not leaked or misused.
