Djkovic returns to Australia a year after being expelled for not being vaccinated against covid-19

Novak Djokovic will once again be a "player to beat", said Australian Open director Craig Tiley on Tuesday (27), the same day the tennis player returned to the country almost a year after being expelled following a political-legal conflict related to his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

“We welcome you to Australia,” said the person responsible for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, which will take place in Melbourne between January 16th and 29th. “I think when we spoke he was arriving in Adelaide and I think he will be a player to beat again,” Tiley added.

The Australian Tennis Federation confirmed shortly afterwards that the Serb had arrived in the country. The current world number five will begin his preparation for the tournament by playing the ATP 250 in Adelaide next Sunday (31).

Djokovic did not participate in the 2022 Australian Open because he refused to be vaccinated against the virus Covid-19.

After filing a revocation request that ended up being rejected, the tennis player spent several days in a detention center and was subsequently expelled from the country shortly before the tournament for failing to comply with the mandatory immunization rule. Furthermore, he had been entering Australian territory for three years.

Since then, the vaccination requirement has been relaxed and the Serb obtained a visa after the restriction on access to the country was also lifted in November.

If you win your tenth Australian Open, Djokovic equals the record of 22 Grand Slam titles Rafael Nadal, current number 2 in the world.
