Two simultaneous accidents involving trains in Switzerland leave people injured

Passengers on the Swiss train system were injured in two derailments just minutes apart in the northwest of the country, local police said. It is not yet possible to quantify the number of injuries but there are no reports of deaths. Among the hypotheses for derailments are the strength of the winds during the arrival of a storm.

The first train derailed at around 16:30 pm local time (11:30 am in Brasília) between the cities of Luscherz and Biena, and the other, around 20 minutes later, in the vicinity of Büren zum Hof, around 40 kilometers away, according to with the statement.

In both cases, “there were several injuries,” said police spokeswoman Flurina Schenk, adding that, even as night fell in Switzerland, police, medical and fire teams were still at the scene of the accidents. No explanation has yet been given for the two events.

According to public transport company RBS, the second derailment may have been caused by hurricane-force winds that hit the country this Friday (31).

In the first, “the rear of the train turned to the right”, describes the police spokeswoman.

Climate issues are among the hypotheses for accidents

The accident occurred on the line that runs around Lake Bienna, operated by the company Aare Seeland mobil.

A storm moving from southern England brought strong winds to parts of Europe, including Switzerland, according to MeteoSwiss. The strongest gusts were accompanied by rain and thunderstorms.

MeteoSwiss had already issued a warning in the morning about the possibility of winds of 80 to 110 km/h in the plains and between 100 and 140 km/h in the mountains.
