Understand what happens to Thiago Brennand, released in the United Arab Emirates

Businessman and heir Thiago Brennand Fernandes Vieira, 42, paid bail and was released in Abu Dhabi on Friday (14), hours after his arrest in an operation coordinated by the Federal Police (PF). He was considered a fugitive and even had his name included on the Interpol list. Brennand remains in the United Arab Emirates, where he must await the judgment of the extradition process.

Does paying bail prevent extradition?

According to Estadão, a Federal Police delegate with expertise in the international area said that paying bail guarantees that the businessman will await trial in freedom, but does not affect the extradition process. “It doesn’t mean there won’t be extradition. The country maintains good border control,” he explains.

What does extradition depend on?

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security is the body responsible for conducting extradition processes. Before acting, the department normally waits for the formal repatriation request made by the Judiciary, and then forwards the request to the government of the foreign country. According to Estadão, the Ministry had not yet responded to the report on the progress of the case.

Does Brennand need to obey any rules?

Instead of prison, the businessman must comply with alternative precautionary measures, such as providing a fixed address, not leaving the United Arab Emirates without informing the Court and attending hearings whenever notified.

What are the charges against the businessman?

So far, the São Paulo Court has received two complaints against the businessman. The first for attacks against model Helena Gomes, on August 3, in one of the most expensive gyms in the capital of São Paulo. The case was recorded by security cameras and went viral on social media. Brennand is responsible for bodily harm and corruption of minors – for allegedly encouraging his teenage son to also offend the model.

The second complaint was received yesterday. Brennand was accused of forcibly having the initials of his name tattooed on a woman with whom he had a relationship. The crimes charged are rape, false imprisonment, torture, bodily harm, coercion during the process, illegal constraint, threat, unauthorized recording of sexual intimacy and disclosure of a rape or sex scene.
