US and South Korea hold military exercises after North Korean missile test

This Monday (26), warships from the United States and South Korea carried out the first joint naval exercise off the South Korean coast since 2017. The action is a response to ballistic tests of curto reach carried out by North Korea last Sunday (25).

The exercise between the allied countries is the first in 5 years on the coast of the peninsula and involves the participation of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

The tests left North Korea on alert. Although it carries out constant ballistic tests, the North Korean government sees its neighbor's military exercises as a real threat of invasion.

Joint military action

“This exercise was prepared to demonstrate the firm will of the South Korea-US alliance to respond to North Korean provocations,” the South Korean Navy said in a statement. Washington is the South Korean government's main security ally and has around 28.500 soldiers in the country to protect the country from its northern neighbor, which has nuclear weapons.

Exercises on the South Korean east coast involve more than 20 ships and several aircraft. The actions will simulate anti-ship, anti-submarine combat, tactical maneuvers and other maritime operations.

North Korea, Russia and China react

At the UN, North Korean ambassador Kim Song said that these exercises “raise concern”. “It is evidently an extremely dangerous act to light the fuse and could bring the situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of war,” he said.

Russia and China also criticized the joint military exercises between the Americans and South Korea. The countries asked that both “not tomem measures that increase tensions in the region”.
