USA in focus and the war between Biden and Trump: why are the midterm elections so important?

Will Democrat Joe Biden be able to maintain the majority he currently has in the United States (USA) Congress? Or will control of the Senate and House of Representatives return to the hands of Republicans, who will try to obstruct President Biden's policies? And Donald Trump? How can elections strengthen your candidacy for president in the future? The answer to all this will come on Tuesday (8), during the US midterm elections. The House of Representatives, 30 seats in the Senate, 36 governors and practically all local assemblies are at stake.

The so-called midterm elections – midterms – are considered a moment of approval or disapproval of the occupant of the White House. In more than 160 years, the president's party has rarely escaped punishment.

And for this historic tradition to be repeated, Republicans – inflamed by former president Donald Trump – are carrying out an intense campaign (including fake news, exaggerations and threats) on social media.

Many of them are already being disseminated here in Brazil by supporters of Jari Bolsonaro, who see Trump's possible return as support for coup incursions in Brazil:

Biden and Trump summon crowds on the eve of legislative elections

Joe Biden and Donald Trump begin a frenetic last day of campaigning, this Monday (7), the eve of the midterm elections that will mark the remainder of the United States president's administration and which could pave the way for the return of his predecessor the White House.

According to polls, Republicans will gain a majority in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, and many Democrats fear losing the Senate as well. A defeat that, if it occurs, will leave Congress in the hands of the opposition, when Biden still has two years of government left.

That's all Trump wants to become the Republican candidate for president again.

The political landscape has been tilting against Democrats since the summer. They focused their closing arguments on voting rights, protecting access to abortion and welfare and, in Biden's case, the threat posed by Trump Republicans' growing support for political conspiracy theories.

Democrats are trying to convince Americans that Trump's party has no proposals for the economy and still wants to take away rights already won. Today, Biden tweeted: “Congressional Republicans have adopted plans to cut Social Security and Medicare – like reducing benefits or increasing costs for retirees and raising the retirement age. They’re not even hiding it.”

Donald Trump Junior, son of the former Republican president – appeals to the fear of violence: “Vote to bring security back to our cities”.

The lie about electoral fraud

At a rally over the weekend, Trump — who continues to launch false claims that the 2020 election was rigged — accused Democrats, whom he called “radical and insane,” of causing “the decay and downfall of the United States.” .
