Coal mine explosion in Colombia leaves at least 11 dead

An explosion at a coal mine in central Colombia killed at least 11 people and left 10 others missing. The incident resulted from the "accumulation of gases" that exploded due to a spark generated at work and which caused a chain reaction, according to the Cundinamarca government.

Governor Nicolás García said in an interview with Colombia's Blu Radio that they were still looking for 10 people on Wednesday afternoon (15), so the death toll could rise. “It’s quite difficult to find them alive”, he lamented.

“A regrettable tragedy occurred at the Sutatausa mine, where 11 people died. We are making every effort with the government of Cundinamarca to rescue the trapped people alive. A hug of solidarity to the victims and their families”, said President Gustavo Petro on Twitter.

The explosion occurred on Tuesday night in a tunnel of six legal mines “that communicate with each other”, according to the governor. The National Mining Agency (ANM) reported on Twitter that two workers were “rescued alive”.
