Attack in Istanbul leaves at least 6 dead; Turkish president talks about 'vile attack'

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, denounced this Sunday (13) a "vile attack" that left six dead and 81 injured in Istanbul, a cosmopolitan city and destination for tourists from all over the world. The loud explosion happened on the busy Istiklal Avenue in the historic Beyoglu neighborhood. The signs point to a suicide attack.

“The perpetrators of this vile attack will be unmasked. May our population be assured that they will be punished”, declared Erdogan, two hours after the explosion that occurred on the busy Istiklal street, in the heart of Istanbul.

“The first observations suggest that this is a terrorist attack,” the president told journalists, adding that “a woman was involved”, without offering further details.

In the early afternoon, the vice-president of Turkey, Fuat Oktay, confirmed that it was a terrorist attack and that it had been committed by a woman.

“We consider this to be a terrorist attack due to the detonation of a bomb by an attacker who would be a woman, according to initial information,” Oktay told reporters. However, it is still unclear whether it was a suicide attack.
