Exposure on the internet: how far to go?

Life is not a story - and even if it were, its exposition would not disappear in 24 hours. Cases of million-dollar robberies involving celebrities have raised the alarm: be careful with what you share on social networks. This could backfire on you!

The theft of jewelry from the apartment of Carlinhos Maia, a digital influencer, sparked a warning about the negative consequences of excessive exposure on social media. And we are not talking from a psychological point of view, but about the risks of robberies, thefts, kidnappings and many crimes against property that can put someone's life at risk.

Displaying it on networks can serve as bait for burglars. In the case of the influencer, there was a “happy ending” with the identification and arrest of criminals. But it’s not always – or almost never – like this.

The theft at Carinhos Maia's apartment was valued at R$5 million. Eliabio Custódio Nepomuceno, who confessed to the crime, reported that he learned from the victim's social networks that the apartment would be empty on the day of the crime. Carlinhos informed his followers that he was undergoing surgery and his husband was traveling. O The thief's statement was revealed in an interview with Fantástico, from TV Globo.

It's not just in Brazil

This type of “investigation” carried out by criminals to rob famous people does not only happen in Brazil. In 2016, socialite and businesswoman Kim Kardashian suffered a million-dollar robbery at a hotel in Paris. The confession of “Old Omar”, the leader of the gang that carried out the robbery, was similar to that of Nepomuceno.

It's not just 24 hours...

Those who believe that stories disappear after 24 hours are very mistaken: there are countless tools capable of recording what was posted.

Internet & work

It's a vicious and dangerous cycle: to captivate followers, influencers increasingly share their routine. This can and is recommended by network experts, but some care must be taken:

  • Post, but only after the action has occurred. It doesn't hurt to wait an hour or two to post that luxury item purchase (a video, for example) made directly from the store.
  • Avoid marking the exact location and time of posts or stories: influencer Nah Cardoso explained in some videos that, after a stalker followed her out of the country, she decided to stop sharing locations when she was there. She leaves it to record everything after she has already left there.
  • Do not show places where you leave valuable belongings, such as rooms, drawers, trunks... Remember that the thief can use the information as a “mine map”. Don't make it easy for him!

In addition to basic care, remember: it is possible to have it without showing it, so ostentations can remain off the grid. 😉
