Femicides grow 10% in the country in the 1st half of 2022 and reach 699 victims

The number of femicides recorded in the first half of this year in Brazil is 10,8% higher compared to the same period in 2019, which was not affected by the dynamics imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. On average, four women were murdered per day between January and June, totaling 699 victims (3,2% more than last year).

The data is part of a study carried out by the Brazilian Public Security Forum, which gathered criminal statistics on gender-based and intra-family violence from the first half of the last four years. The numbers evolved from 631 femicides in 2019 to 664 in 2020, 677 in 2021 and 699 in 2022.

Fewer resources

The study pointed out that, despite the constant growth in records of feminicides, the resources invested by the federal government to combat this violence against women have decreased drastically.

In 2022, only R$5 million was allocated to combat the violence against women, the smallest transfer of resources in the last four years, according to technical note produced by the Institute of Socioeconomic Studies (Inesc).
