Brazilian film about indigenous resistance wins award at Cannes

The Brazilian feature film A Flor do Buriti, produced by Brazilian Renée Nader Messora and Portuguese João Salaviza, was awarded on Friday night (27) at the 2023 Cannes Festival, in France. He won the Prix D'ensemble (Best Team award) in the exhibition “Um Certo Olhar” (Un Certain Regard).

The film, produced by the Minas Gerais company Entre Filmes, premiered on May 23 and covers the last 80 years of history of the Krahô, an indigenous people who live in the north of Tocantins, on the border with Maranhão and Piauí. Different forms of resistance are portrayed, such as the fight for land, for greater freedom, for the preservation of ancestral rites and the nature of the communities where they live. An event highlighted in the film is the massacre that occurred in 1940. It is estimated that farmers in the region killed at least 26 people from the Krahô people.
