Hurricane Ian loses intensity after leaving destruction and deaths in Florida

Florida, in the United States, is reviewing the death toll from Hurricane Ian this Saturday (1st). The phenomenon is expected to dissipate after having caused flooding in South Carolina. In a provisional assessment, made this Saturday morning (1), local authorities reported that at least 23 deaths had been recorded, most of them elderly people and people drowned. Some US media outlets, such as CNN, reported up to 45 deaths.

The death toll is preliminary as the search continues for missing people, including 17 passengers on a migrant boat that capsized Wednesday near the Florida Keys.

After causing damage in Florida, the hurricane headed towards South Carolina, with winds of up to 140 km/h, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). It then lost strength until it became a tropical storm.

American President Joe Biden asked citizens not to ignore warnings from local authorities, such as in South Carolina, where they asked not to drive through flooded roads.

“É uma tempestade perigosa que trará ventos fortes e muita água, mas o mais perigoso será o erro humano. Sejam inteligentes, tomem boas decisões, verifiquem como estão seus amigos e familiares e se mantenham a salvo”, tuitou o governador Henry McMaster.

Around 575 families and businesses were without power on Friday, in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia, according to the specialized website PowerOutage.

“Historic” damage in Florida

In Florida, in addition to the high number of victims, there was “historic” material damage due to unprecedented flooding, according to Governor Ron DeSantis.

On Friday, in Kissimmee, near Orlando, authorities traveled through flooded areas by boat to rescue residents trapped in their homes.

“We are just beginning to see the magnitude of the destruction (…) which is probably among the worst” in United States history, Biden said. “Reconstruction will take months, years,” she estimated.
