Greta Thunberg and activists expelled after protest in Norway

Greta Thunberg and dozens of 'Sami' activists - people native to the Arctic - were expelled by the police this Wednesday (1st) after trying to block access to several Norwegian ministries, in protest against the wind farms installed in their territory.

Protesters sought to “shut down the state” of Norway in protest against continued wind turbine activity in the Fosen region, more than a year after the Norwegian Supreme Court ruled against such farms.

According to oppositionists, this project violates the right of the region's original people – the Sami – to practice reindeer husbandry.

The Sami are an indigenous minority of around 100 people who live between Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

The protest began last Thursday, when a Sami group dressed in traditional blue and red clothing occupied the entrance to the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.

The activists were evicted on Sunday night but returned during the week, extending the protest to more government buildings.

On Sunday, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg joined the protest.

“This protest is important because it is about human rights that have been violated,” Thunberg told TV2.
