Origins of the war
- On February 24, 2022, the world went on alert for a potentially alarming international military conflict, the first since World War II. That morning, the Russian army invaded Ukraine under the argument of threats of expansion of the West about the country of the former Soviet Union. Ukraine wanted to belong to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). This desire, expressed through the mouth of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky – declared averse to Russian influence – was understood by Russia as a risk.
- Instability in the region is long-standing: Territorial disputes in Ukraine have lasted for centuries and have already been carried out by different peoples, such as the Slavs and even the vikings .
Lost lives
