Harry, a prince on the warpath

Prince Harry, youngest son of Charles III, is a man at war with his family, but who dreams of reconciliation. However, the imminent publication of his memoirs, following further criticism of the British royal family, threatens to dash his hopes.

In a six-hour documentary series, available on Netflix since December, and promotional interviews for his book Save (“What remains”, in Brazil) – which will be released on January 10 – calls the father a liar and accuses the royal family of “treason” for failing to protect him and his wife, Meghan Markle, an African-American actress whom he married in May 2018.

He also denounced the war between the press services of different members of the monarchy, which, according to him, do not hesitate to spread false information against some to protect others. Buckingham Palace did not react to these accusations, which ignore the family motto: 'never complain, never explain'.

For a long time, British public opinion forgave all the behavior of the rebellious red-haired prince. Born on September 15, 1984, two years after his brother, Harry He was then third in the order of succession to the throne. He is now fifth, behind the sons of William.

In 1997, the image of the 12-year-old prince walking with his head bowed behind his mother's coffin moved the world.

Difficult years followed: at the age of 17 he smoked marijuana, drank and partied. In 2004, she got into an argument with a photographer outside a nightclub. The following year, she caused a scandal when she dressed up as a Nazi at a party.

After graduating from the prestigious Eton College, apparently with a little help, he spent a gap year in Australia and Africa, caring for orphans in Lesotho, where he set up an NGO in memory of his mother.

In 2005, Harry entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, a respected training center for army officers. His military career lasted 10 years and was marked by two missions in Afghanistan for 10 weeks in 2007-2008, and then as pilotthat of helicopters from September 2012 to January 2013. He resigned in 2015.

His mother's death marked him forever: “I blocked out all my emotions for 20 years,” he told the Daily Telegraph in 2017. But he sought help. In 2021, Harry said that he had undergone four years of therapy, in a series about mental health co-produced with American presenter Oprah Winfrey. The period coincides with his engagement, in 2017, to Meghan Markle and his wedding the following year. In 2019, the couple had their first child, Archie, and in 2021, their daughter Lilibet was born.

His love affair with Meghan seemed destined to breathe a new wind of diversity into the monarchy, but tensions soon arose that led the couple to move to California in 2020. Since then, communication between Harry, his father and his brother has largely been cut.

“They showed no desire for reconciliation. I would like to have my father back. I would like to have my brother back”, declared Harry in excerpts from a promotional interview for his book.

In the United States, he and Meghan created “Archewell”, a production company and philanthropic foundation that advocates “compassion”. They made millions of dollars for their documentary series and claim to have three more books in the works.

Although he will miss his “strange family gatherings” and his country, Harry says he intends to return to work for the British royal family.
