IBGE has already counted 60 million in the Census; employees report mistreatment during visits

In addition to the hard work of counting Brazilians for the 2022 Demographic Census - which is taking place late - IBGE census takers still have to deal with mistreatment. Swearing and threats are frequent, according to reports from employees working on the survey. IBGE's goal is to visit 75 million homes by the end of October. More than 20 million have already received census takers.

Close to completing one month, the first data from the 2022 Demographic Census were released. The survey began on August 1st, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and visited 20.290.359 homes across the country. There were 58.291.842 people interviewed, according to the count up to Monday (29), and released this Tuesday (30).

IBGE intends to visit 75 million homes by the end of October, but needs to deal with census takers dropping out. Second Estadão report, employees report verbal attacks, harassment and even threats in different regions of the country.

Brazil is divided by IBGE into 452.246 urban and rural census sectors, 38,4% of which have already started to be visited by census takers.

States that had the most census sectors worked

  • Rio Grande do Norte 53%
  • Pernambuco 52,45%.
  • Federal District 52,04%.

States that had the least number of census sectors worked

  • Mato Grosso 21,81%.
  • Roraima 25,75%.
  • São Paulo 29,63%.
