Iga Swiatek defeats Ons Jabeur and becomes US Open champion for the first time

Young Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek defeated Tunisian Ons Jabeur this Saturday to win the US Open for the first time, the third Grand Slam title of her career. Swiatek, number 1 in the world, closed the game in 2 sets to 0, with scores of 6-2 and 7-6 (7/5), in one hour and 51 minutes of play at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The Polish, 21 years old and two-time Roland Garros champion (2020 and 2022), remains unbeatable in the finals, with victories in the last ten she has played.

In turn, Jabeur, Wimbledon runner-up, missed her second opportunity to be the first African to lift a Major trophy.

The 28-year-old Tunisian saw a devastating start from Swiatek, who won the first set in half an hour, and fought hard in the second until forcing a tiebreak, but was unable to take the game to the third set.

After her defeat to Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon, the Tunisian had a wonderful campaign in New York, having conceded just one set until the semifinals.

The first African to compete for the US Open trophy, Jabeur fell in the final to a Swiatek who progressed through the tournament discreetly and containing her expectations.

But in the decisive game, the Pole presented her devastating version, with which she won six other titles this season, including Roland Garros, and added another Grand Slam trophy to her gallery.

On a women's tour without a dominant player since the decline of Serena Williams, Swiatek is the first to win two of the four Majors in the same season since 2016.

In Serena's farewell tournament, the Pole was also the first player to reach seven titles in one year since the American star, in 2014.

“I had to be focused and this tournament was very challenging because New York is so noisy, so crazy, there are so many temptations in the city, inspiring people I met. I’m very proud,” said Swiatek before receiving the trophy.

The US Open men's final will be on Sunday between Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Norwegian Casper Rudd. The winner will lift their first Grand Slam trophy and will be the new number 1 in the ATP rankings.
