IPCA-15: inflation preview in August shows a drop in prices; fuel reduction triggers deflation

The Broad National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15) for August fell 9,6% compared to the same period last year. The reduction in the Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS) rates on fuel and electricity contributed to deflation in the month. However, food prices are still a springboard for inflation that continues to eat away at Brazilians' income.

The IPCA-15, which is a preview of official inflation, recorded a drop of 0,73% in August this year, compared to the previous month – this is what we call deflation. This is biggest deflation in the historical series of the indicator, which began to be measured in 1991, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
