Influenza B and RSV are the main causes of respiratory infections in children, says ITpS

A survey carried out by the Todos pela Saúde Institute shows that the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and the Influenza B virus are circulating in Brazil, mainly in children. In the Southeast region, in addition to both, the covid-19 virus also has high transmission compared to last year. The analyzes are based on data from more than 1,5 million tests carried out by Dasa, DB Molecular, HLAGyn and Sabin laboratories since December 2021.

Positivity for Influenza B (FluB) and RSV remains at high levels compared to last year. FluB, which was below 2022% in 1, reached 8% and 6% in the first two weeks of March. RSV has had an average positivity rate of 15% since December 2022.

In both cases, children are the most infected. Of the tests carried out on children aged 0 to 4 years that had a positive result, 88% indicated RSV, and of those carried out in the group aged 4 to 9 years, 84,6% indicated FluB.

How is the Covid-19 situation?

Regarding states with sufficient data for analysis, Minas Gerais which is records the highest increase in positivity for covid-19: from 14% to 23%.

Rio de Janeiro, where the rate fluctuated from 27% to 29%, has the highest rate in the Southeast region.

On the other hand, there was a drop in the Federal District, from 14% to 6%, and in São Paulo, from 33% to 28%, although in the latter, positivity remains high.

When analyzing positivity based on age, there is a significant difference that increases depending on the age group: the lowest percentages are among the youngest (5%, from 0 to 4 years old and from 5 to 9 years old) and the highest , from 50 years old (36% from 50 to 59 years old, 39% from 60 to 69 years old, 34% from 70 to 79 years old and 30% from 80 years old).

Across the country, the positivity rate for Covid-19 tests fluctuated one percentage point downwards and is now at 25%.
