Iran player sentenced to death

Iranian footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani was sentenced to death after participating in a protest in favor of women's rights in Iran. Azadani was accused of treason and for being involved in the protest following the death of Mahsa Amini, in which three police officers died .

The protest took place on November 25th and, in addition to Azadani, eight people are accused of the police officers' deaths.

In addition to the accusation of treason, the player was also named by the Iranian government as “a participant in an armed group that aims to attack the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

FIFPro, the union of professional football players, published a statement saying it was “shocked” by the news and demanded the immediate annulment of the sentence.

What are these protests in Iran?

On September 13, Mahsa Amini was detained by Iranian police and was accused of violating the women's dress code by letting a lock of her hair show. Mahsa died at age 22, three days after his arrest.

The Iranian government says the young woman died from an illness, but Mahsa's family denies this and claims she was beaten. Thousands of people across the country are protesting against the laws and the lack of rights.

During the World Cup in Qatar, many Iranian fans, who cannot attend stadiums in Iran, used the stands to shout for freedom.
