The political leader was head of state between 1979 and 2017, where he was the second Angolan president in the post-independence period, during turbulent years of civil war. ''Zedu'', as he was also known, became the leader of the Angolan Liberation Movement (MPLA). José Eduardo had striking features of centrality and discretion in his skin and career.

“Your brand is very strong. He is remembered by part of the Angolan population as the president who led Angola to peace, but he is also remembered as the president who maintained a very pronounced inequality in the country”, highlighted journalist Cândida Pinto, following the news of the death of the former president.

The person who validates JES's comment is Arante Kivuvu, an activist who demanded his dismissal when he was in power. “During his government, there was another small elite that benefited directly, benefited from the country's wealth and made it their own. It was a government that was far from fulfilling the lives of many Angolans”.
