José Múcio Monteiro: who is the Minister of Defense in the new Lula government?

The former president of the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU) José Múcio Monteiro was chosen by President Lula to command the Ministry of Defense in the PT member's third term. Find out more about the life and political career of the new minister.

Who is José Múcio Monteiro?

Born in Belém, Pará, he graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Pernambuco.

Mucium He began his political career in the 1970s and, over the years, went by the acronyms PFL, PSDB and PTB.

He was mayor of the city of Rio Formoso (PE), between 1982 and 1983. Afterwards, he was Secretary of Transport, Communication and Energy of Pernambuco.

He was also elected federal deputy for five consecutive terms, having graduated to take on the position of Secretary of Planning, Urbanism and Environment for the City of Recife (1997-1998) and Lula's ministry (2007-2009).

In September of 2009, José Múcio Monteiro He resigned as federal deputy to take up a seat at the Federal Audit Court (TCU). He left the Court in December 2020.
