Harvey Weinstein sexual assault trial begins in Los Angeles

The trial of former American film producer Harvey Weinstein begins this Monday (10) in Los Angeles, the city where for decades he was one of the main figures in the Hollywood industry and now faces accusations of sexual abuse. Weinstein is serving a 23-year prison sentence in New York after being convicted in this city of a series of sexual assaults.

The 70-year-old producer now faces 11 other charges. The trial is expected to last around two months. If convicted, the movie mogul – who has pleaded not guilty to all charges – could be sentenced to a further 140 years behind bars.

Accusations of sexual harassment and abuse against Weinstein exploded in October 2017. His conviction in New York in 2020 was a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement.

In June, he lost a bid to overturn those sex crime convictions. He was also charged separately by British prosecutors with indecent assault on a woman in London in 1996.

In total, nearly 90 women, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek, have accused Weinstein of assault or harassment.

He claims all sexual encounters were consensual and his lawyer told the press that the Los Angeles accusations “are many years old” and cannot “be corroborated by forensic evidence” or “reliable witnesses.”
