World leaders debate financing the fight against climate change

This Monday (7) more than 100 world leaders will meet at the COP27 summit to discuss improvements in financing for the most vulnerable countries, devastated by the effects of climate change.

The Egyptian president and host, Abdel Fattah al Sissi, and the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, will be the first to speak at the meeting, which will be attended by leaders from around the world such as the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and the head of the German Government Olaf Scholz.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will not participate in the event. China is the country that emits the most greenhouse gases. The second biggest polluter is the United States and President Joe Biden will travel to COP27 on November 11th.

The President of France declared that “the United States and China must respond to this challenge, as the Europeans are the only ones who pay”.

Cooperate or die

“Humanity has a choice: cooperate or die. Either a pact for climate solidarity, or a pact for collective suicide,” said Guterres in his speech on the second day of COP27 in Sharm el Sheikh.
