Santa Catarina coast has diarrhea outbreak

At least eight cities on the coast of Santa Catarina are facing an outbreak of diarrhea. The reasons are still being investigated by the State Department of Health. In Florianópolis, the city hall has already recognized the status of an epidemic. In the capital of Santa Catarina alone, there are 1.800 cases of people treated in 16 days.

The alerts started arriving on social media and they don't stop:

The municipalities identified so far are Florianópolis, Balneário Camboriú, Bombinhas, Navegantes, Penha, in addition to Balneário Piçarras, Porto Belo and Itapema.

Investigation

The investigation carried out by the Infectious Diseases Sector, of the Department of Health, has not yet been able to detect the type of virus or bacteria causing the epidemic.

What is known so far is that a bacterium called Escherichia coli, found in the human intestine, would be the link between several cases. Now it is necessary to cross-reference the data to find out whether or not this is responsible for the outbreak of the disease.

The number of polluted beaches in Santa Catarina is also an issue: the bulletin from the Catarinense Environmental Institute points out that more than half of the bathing spots are unsuitable.

Another question is what could be causing an outbreak of diarrhea, whether food, the increased movement of people at this time of year or an indisposition to the heat.
