Lula and Bolsonaro burn last cartridges on the eve of the election

Lula (PT) and Bolsonaro (PL) burn their last cartridges this Saturday (1st) in São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil, before measuring forces on Sunday (2nd) in the first round of the presidential elections. Ahead in the polls, the former president called his followers to a rally on Avenida Paulista, the scene of large demonstrations. Five kilometers away and practically at the same time, Bolsonaro (PL) will lead a motorcycle that will take him to a rally in Ibirapuera Park.

Bolsonaro's campaign team (PL) expects a noisy demonstration this Saturday (1st) to give a final boost to the former Army captain, which will allow him to avoid defeat against his opponent, as polls predict, including in the first round .

Bolsonaro (PL) will then leave for Santa Catarina, for a last act that will end a month and a half of campaign.

Advertising on radio and television has been banned since Thursday (29), but in-person events and the distribution of electoral material are allowed until this Saturday (1st) night.

The polarized campaign has led to an increase in security measures: candidates constantly wear bulletproof vests and rally stages are surrounded by security barriers to prevent the crowd from getting too close.

“Tense” last few hours

This Saturday (1st) the publication of the latest survey by the Datafolha Institute is also expected, which on Thursday (29) estimated that Lula (PT) would be ahead with a wide advantage of 14 points over Bolsonaro (PL), 48% to 34%.

To obtain a third term on Sunday (2), the former president needs at least 50% of the valid votes (without null and blank votes).

In Thursday's poll (29), Lula (PT) appeared with precisely 50% of these votes. The margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points, which creates uncertainty about the possibility of a second round, scheduled for October 30th.

The last hours of the campaign “will be very tense, everyone will observe the smallest details that could move the needle one way or the other,” Jairo Nicolau, political scientist at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), told AFP.

Polling stations open at 8:00 am and close at 17:00 pm (Brasília time) on Sunday and the results will be announced at the end of the day.
