Lula and Petro agree to strengthen the fight against environmental crimes in the Amazon

President Lula and his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, agreed, this Wednesday (31), in Brasília, to strengthen the joint fight against environmental and organized crimes in the Amazon, shared by both countries.

In a bilateral meeting after the South American summit the day before, the leaders agreed on the need to combat “loggers, illegal miners, land grabbers and drug traffickers” in the Amazon region, details a statement released by the Brazilian Presidency.

“We are going to make an agreement between Amazon countries to revitalize it. It includes the scientific, political and military defense of the world's third climate pillar”, said Petro in a message on Twitter along with a photo with Lula, at the end of the meeting at Palácio da Alvorada.

Lula and Petro also discussed measures to “strengthen” the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), a body also made up of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela, which seeks to preserve the largest tropical forest in the world.

The two left-wing leaders will meet again at a forum for scientific debates on the Amazon, which will be held on July 8 in the border city of Leticia, Colombia, according to the Planalto statement.

After this “preparatory” meeting, Lula will host, in August, a summit of Amazonian countries in which Petro confirmed his participation, in Belém.
