Coup camp in DF is dismantled; States follow federal order

Hundreds of Bolsonarists invaded the headquarters of the Three Powers in Brasília on Sunday afternoon (8): the Planalto Palace, the National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court. There was vandalism and destruction of several areas of the buildings. The vandals called for military intervention and the removal of President Lula, in a clear coup movement. 12h49: Coup camps have already begun to be dismantled in various parts of the country this Monday, following an order from STF minister Alexandre de Moraes. (g1)

In São Paulo, the camp installed in front of the state Legislative Assembly and the Military Circle, in the South Zone of the capital, began to be dismantled in the early afternoon. The police were sent to the scene to remove the protesters.

11h44: Former Minister of Tourism Gilson Machado Neto, affiliated with the PL, and several supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) have published an Army communication page on social media as if it were an enlistment of civilians against the results of the elections, encouraging the registration of Bolsonaro supporters for coup acts. Among them, hunters, sports shooters and collectors, the (CACs). The army page published is not for this purpose. The “Pro-Active Reserve” address was created in 2015 and is used by military personnel only to send a weekly bulletin with news, aimed at reservists.

11h44: The first lady, Janja, made a post on social media about the terrorist acts that took place in Brasília this Sunday. In a series of tweets, the first lady stated that “democracy will not bend and President Lula will not lower his head. That’s what Dona Lindu always told him and that’s what the Brazilian people expect from him at this moment: never lower your head, Lula.”

11h16: The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, said that “the legislative police, bodies responsible for the security of the National Congress, carried out 44 arrests in the act of criminals who carried out undemocratic acts and scenes of savagery in Brasília”.

11h08: The Communication Secretariat of the Palácio do Planalto released a note listing part of the damage caused by Bolsonarista terrorists to the Palácio do Planalto's collection. One of the damaged works is the painting “As Mulatas” by Di Cavalcanti, estimated at R$8 million. According to the note, “it is not yet possible to have a detailed survey of all the paintings, sculptures and pieces of furniture destroyed”.

The governor of Alagoas, Paulo Dantas (MDB), made the state's police forces available to the Federal Government on Sunday night, and classified the terrorist attack in Brasília as “inadmissible and criminal”.

The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB), said he will send 60 police officers from the Shock Battalion in support of the Federal Government.

This morning, 70 military police officers from the Bahia Shock Battalion sent by governor Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT) disembarked in Brasília.

07h: The Military Police of the Federal District heads this Monday morning (9) to the coup camp near the Army headquarters in Brasília. Action comes after decision by Federal Supreme Court judge, Alexandre de Moares, who gave 24 hours for camps to be closed.

22h00: After hundreds of people arrested and investigations into those involved in full swing, the Brazilian authorities, in consensus, said they were withprometaken with the investigations and the reestablishment of national order. The STF, through its president, Rosa Weber, assured that it will act to judge and punish those involved in today's extremist episode.

Senators Renan Calheiros and Randolfe Rodrigues, based on the acts, propose a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate and attribute responsibility to the extremists involved in this Sunday's episode.

21h38: At the end of the press conference, the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, emphasized that Brazilians can be reassured by today's actions and added: “I assure you that this will no longer happen in our country”.

20h50: Minister Flávio Dino also commented that the investigation actions cannot end, as “there are still people right now, on the internet, talking about terrorist acts, but they will not be able to destroy Brazilian democracy”.

20h46: Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, speaks at a press conference about the invasions episode. “The entire complement of the National Force proved to be insufficient given the gravity of what happened,” said Dino, citing the action that authorized the reinforcement to maintain public order this morning. In addition, the minister also said that he will investigate those involved in the acts.

“There are approximately 40 buses seized. We have already identified all the buses that came to Brasília. and all financiers of such buses. We will have new requests for preventive prevention… we are adopting more measures to reinforce the security of the capital of the Republic”

20h17: The North American government expressed solidarity with the Brazilian authorities regarding the extremist attacks against the Three Powers of Brazil this Sunday (8), through United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The US congresswoman, from the Democratic party, Alexandria Ocacio-Cortez, made a post on her Instagram in support of President Lula, stating that: “Almost two years after the invasion of the Capitol attacked by fascists, we see a movement of fascists against the government of Brazil”.

20h04: The Army even placed troops in Brasília ready for a possible GLO (Guarantee of Law and Order) decree this Sunday (8), says Folha de S.Paulo report. According to the report, the objective would be to contain the radical Bolsonarists who were vandalizing the National Congress, the Palácio do Planalto and the STF (Supreme Federal Court). In total, 2.500 soldiers are stationed in Brasília. 🚥

20h00: Coups make their way back from the National Congress and the Military Police break up gas bombs and continue trying to remove the extremists from the area where the buildings of the Three Powers are located. The Federal District Police reported that 170 suspects have already been arrested.

19h46: Representatives of the Judiciary of Brazil, including the president of the Superior Military Court, Lúcio Mário de Barros Goes, signed a public note on the demonstrations this Sunday (8), condemning the coup acts, reaffirming the “empire of the Law”, and reinforcing that “no one should attack the Democratic Rule of Law”.

19h: Public Agency report tracked the coordination of extremist acts that destroyed Três Poderes buildings in Brasília and shows that the action was coordinated days ago via social media:

“Selma”, an allusion to the Jungle — an expression used by the Brazilian military — was one of the codes used by Bolsonaristas to combine the last stages of the invasion of the Congress, Planalto and STF buildings. The code had been used for days by Bolsonaristas freely on open social networks, such as Twitter.

The expression “Festa da Selma” was even used alongside the hashtag #BrazilianSpring — Brazilian Spring, in English. A report by Pública revealed that the expression was launched by Steve Bannon, Donald Trump's former strategist, shortly after Bolsonaro's defeat in the 2022 elections. The term is an appropriation of movements in pro-democracy Arab countries, and was shared by Bannon to raise false doubts about the Brazilian electoral system, informs the public agency.
