Who is Mauro Vieira?

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Mauro is a Brazilian lawyer and diplomat.

  • 2010 to 2015: ambassador to the United States;
  • 2015 to 2016: Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Dilma government;
  • 2016: appointed by former president Michel Temer to the position of permanent representative of Brazil at the United Nations (UN);
  • 2019 to 2022: ambassador to Croatia;
  • 2023: takes over as Minister of Foreign Affairs for the second time.

Announced in early December 2022 as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Lula government, Mauro Vieira said that the president asked Brazil to resume relations with Venezuela. Furthermore, another request from the PT member would be to bring Brazil back to the international scene: “He [Lula] said that Brazil was absent for a long time and that the policy that should be implemented during his government should be a policy of rebuilding bridges ”.
