Mega operation against arms trafficking seizes 180 rifles

Operation Guarani Connection was carried out by the Federal Police this Thursday morning (2), in Paraná and Bahia, and has the collaboration of international police agencies from the United States and Portugal. The agents carried out six search and seizure warrants in the municipalities of Foz do Iguaçu, Porto Seguro and Feira de Santana. In addition to international arms trafficking, the operation also focuses on money laundering and currency evasion.

The 3rd Federal Criminal Court of Rio de Janeiro authorized the searches, since the weapons were destined for criminals in Rio de Janeiro, according to investigations.

The court blocked around R$10 million worth of assets belonging to those suspected of being part of the faction responsible for the international trafficking of weapons for restricted use by the armed forces.

How was the operation?

The clandestine cargo would have come on a plane that departed from Miami, in the United States, and would stop at a Paraguayan airport before arriving in Rio.

To deceive the inspection, those investigated made up the records of the cargo's contents, as well as attributing possession of the cargo to an “orange man” – who was unaware of the scheme –, according to the PF.
