Messi wins 'best in the world' for the 7th time

The world champion in the last World Cup with Argentina, Lionel Messi adds another award to his football history, being elected the best football player of 2022 by FIFA. Messi beat French players Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappé who were also competing for the award. Player Alexia Putellas was the winner of the women's category.

This is the seventh 'The Best´ of the career of the Argentine player – who currently plays for PSG in France –, second prize in this 'new format'.

The 35-year-old star won the FIFA award as the best in the world in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019.

 “This year was crazy for me, I managed to make my dream come true after fighting so much, searching so much, insisting so much. It’s every player’s dream and very few achieve it and I did it”, said the star upon receiving the award, visibly nervous.

“We represent our entire selection, our group, this is part of a team and we recognize the best in the world,” said Messi after receiving the award.

In fact, members of the Argentine national team dominated this Monday's awards ceremony (27): Lionel Scaloni and Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez received the awards for best coach and best goalkeeper, respectively.
