In America or Europe: migrants at risk in their search for refuge

In Europe, a new refugee crisis intensifies amid diplomatic and political tensions. Between the United States and Mexico, an old problem that costs lives. By the end of 2021, 89,3 million people around the world had been forced to leave their homes due to war, violence, fear of persecution and human rights violations, according to the United Nations. The number is more than double the number of citizens who remained displaced by World War II until the last decade.

Homeless in Paris

This Sunday (4), between 300 and 400 homeless immigrants occupied an empty building in Gentilly, a city south of Paris, and dozens of them took refuge on the roof to avoid being expelled. Among the migrants are Africans from Sudan, Chad and Ivory Coast, as well as Afghans with their families.

The 8.000 m2 building would be demolished on Saturday (3), according to United Migrants, the association that supports them. French security forces asked people to leave the area, and the group refused. The city claims that the occupation “is illegal” and that the building “is not adapted to accommodate people”. United Migrants said one of its leaders has been arrested.

USA-Mexico

Last Thursday (1), at least 9 immigrants drowned and 37 were rescued from the water after trying to cross the Rio Grande do Mexico for United States. The incident was reported by authorities on Friday (02). (BBC)

53 migrants were detained on the American side of the river and 39 on the Mexican side. The group left from a location in South Texas, a state that is often used to try to enter American soil. According to US Customs, mass drownings appear to be the worst in recent memory on the Rio Grande.

According to US authorities, almost 50.000 immigrants were arrested in the same region in 2021, and searches are still being carried out for “other potential victims”. Read more heresystem. (UOL)

English Channel

This Saturday (3), almost 1.000 people crossed the English Channel, between Continental Europe and the United Kingdom, in less than a day. The immigrants completed the dangerous crossing in 20 boats, according to the British Ministry of Defense this Sunday (4).

More than 26 thousand passages like this have occurred since the beginning of the year. Last Friday (2), 221 people had also arrived in the United Kingdom via this stretch of the Atlantic Ocean. The British Ministry of Defense reported on the 23rd that 1.300 migrants tried to cross the canal in less than 24 hours. (euronews)

The volume represents a record that has not been seen since 2018, when other access routes – such as the Eurotunnel – there were more blockages.

Until then, 2021 was the year there was the largest number of people crossing the canal (28.000) towards British soil. By the end of 2022, the total number of migrants could reach 60.000, estimates a recent report by the British parliament. (@profantoniogeography)
