In the digital world there is much more space for information than in any other traditional medium (TV, radio, print). Those born after 1996 (generation-Z), however, are rejecting the social media model, considering its use addictive and toxic.

Apps attracting less

82% of North American “gen-zs” see networks as a distraction from studying, according to a survey Tallo research. The group also has a smaller presence on platforms than its predecessors, the Millenials. The generation is characterized by broad diversity and there are more demands when consuming. (Axios)

Currently, the number of people connected on social networks corresponds to 59% of the global populationbut negative impacts brought by them are questionalso used by other age groups. According to Digital NewsReport 2022, the “abundance of choices in the context of the internet” has kept users away from online news. The report brings news consumption data from 46 countries across 6 continents. 

What minimalists look for

Contrary to the habit of scrolling through screens insatiably, movements such as “digital minimalism”, “deep focus” and “social media detox” are increasingly engaging groups of internet users. The wave of using the internet less and better originated outside of here, but is attracting a series of users and influencers on Brazilian networks. 

The vocabulary of young people who prefer more discipline and conscious choices includes terms that explain the mental health of the “average heavy user”. Many of those who seek to use networks less are motivated by distressing experiences that go beyond addiction, such as the constant comparison (Land) with others, body dysmorphia (UOL), anxiety about participating in everything – called FOMO syndrome (Fear of Missing Out) – and other illnesses.
