Tiradentes Film Festival is back and in person

📽️ Are you on vacation? How about a stop in Minas Gerais, more specifically in Tiradentes? The Tiradentes Film Festival, responsible for opening the Brazilian audiovisual calendar annually, begins this Friday (20) and marks the return of in-person screenings, after two online editions due to the covid-19 pandemic. 🙌

If you are a fan of the seventh art and like national productions, Tiradentes is perfect for you! And this year, the exhibition will have a physical reunion, ideal for also discussing the current scenario of national cinema and pointing out the path forward.

In the list of films that will be shown, there are gems from national production, such as the short “Uma Mulher Pense”, made by indigenous women of the Yanomami ethnic group.

Resumption and reconstruction

The event curator points out that the sector has been weakened by political issues and also by the pandemic in recent years and now a “collective effort will be needed to build new foundations and reinforce resistant structures”.

Therefore, the theme “Cinema Mutirão” guides the exhibition’s programming: the curators want to make this edition a space for collective call for the reconstruction of institutional structures and policies to promote and encourage culture, without leaving aside, of course, traditional discussions about films and professional practices.

There are many challenges to overcome:

  • The reduction of audiences in cinemas;
  • Competition with increasingly strong streaming;
  • Research funding cuts.

“On the one hand, an economic crisis; on the other, a federal political project attempting to demobilize, neutralize and cut public policies. Between one thing and another, the pandemic. This catastrophic scenario did not prevent the persistence of a resilience that sought alternatives to its survival, that sought not to give up its previous achievements, even if insufficient or threatened”, says the text signed by curators Francis Vogner, Camila Vieira and Lila Foster.

What will happen?

34 films will be shown, including previews and themed screenings. The titles come from 19 states and the programming is available on event portal.

Anyone who passes by can also participate in workshops, artistic presentations, shows and book launches. Activities close on January 28th.

History of the exhibition

Organized by Universo Produção since 1998, the Tiradentes Exhibition is in its 26th edition.

It was created with the so-called “resumption cinema”, an expression used to refer to the revival of national production, which occurred in the second half of the 1990s.

As it is the first event on the annual Brazilian audiovisual calendar, discussions in Tiradentes end up influencing other festivals throughout the year.

The event has established itself as a space to support independent production: the Aurora Exhibition, the highlight of the program, presents new works by directors who have up to three feature films on their CV, and has become a showcase for the entire exhibition.
