9 die in collapse in the São Paulo city of Itapecerica da Serra

This Tuesday (20), at around 8:45 am, a slab collapsed inside a company in Itapecerica da Serra (SP), where around 64 people were gathered. At least 9 people died and 31 were injured after being buried by the debris of the structure.

At the time of the collapse, there was a meeting with around 64 people inside the building, according to Major Luciana Soares. Of the 31 injured, 3 are in serious condition. The rescued victims are being taken to hospitals in the region.

The warehouse of around 10 thousand square meters in which the accident occurred belongs to Multiteiner, a company that sells and rents containers for events and other companies.

On top of the slab that gave way, there was a kind of auditorium with chairs lined up. Some of the rescued victims had to be rescued from the rubble throughout the morning and afternoon of Tuesday (20).

Identification of dead and injured

At around 15pm, relatives waiting for news at the company's door were called inside, where the list of fatal victims would be released. According to the FSP, Jucimara de Meneses Cesar, 35, who four months ago was an employee from Multitener, lost four relatives in the accident.

O candidate for state deputy Jones Donizette (Solidarity) and candidate for federal deputy Ely Santos (Republicans) were among those injured. The two had been invited to visit the company, according to Ely's spokesperson.

In a statement, Jones's office said that “both were rescued alive. Four members of his team were also left among the rubble. They have already been rescued and taken to hospital. Jones Donizette deeply regrets and sympathizes with the families who were victims of this disaster, and asks for prayers so that the hospitalized victims have a speedy recovery.”


The list of dead has not yet been released by firefighters or the Military Police.

Governor speaks

According to the current governor of the State of São Paulo, Rodrigo Garcia, “more than 90 men from the Fire Department and other security forces” in the state responded promptly to the emergency. Garcia spoke out through a post on Twitter and expressed solidarity “with the injured and the families of the victims of the collapse”.
