The rise and fall of streaming services

It’s impossible to imagine a world without streaming, right? But in a reality with such competition and varieties available to consumers, platforms are needing to readapt. Launches have been cancelled, charges have been added and even mergers between services are planned for the coming years.

📺 Straight to the streaming time tunnel 

The year was 2011. Netflix landed on Brazilian soil and began a new era in the entertainment market. Renting DVDs from video stores was left behind, giving rise to streaming services. The novelty has revolutionized the way we consume films and series, available whenever and wherever you want.

Now, more than a decade later, platforms still have to fight to win over the public – and even deal with the lack of it. 

Netflix lost almost a million subscribers in the second quarter of this year. If the number surprises anyone, the most shocking thing is knowing that the company itself projected a greater loss, approaching almost two million. This was the company's biggest drop in its 25-year history. (CNN Brazil)

The result may seem negative, but it pleased investors. Shortly after the announcement, the entertainment giant's shares jumped 8%. On the other hand, in 2022 alone, Netflix accumulates a 62% loss in market value.

You can understand where we want to go, right? Streaming services are moving to overcome fluctuations in the sector as a whole. Netflix itself announced charges for sharing passwords and extra members in some countries – justifying that this sharing harmed the “long-term ability to invest and improve the service”. 🎬 Cancellations and mergers

Another strategy is the merger of streams. In early August, Warner Bros. announced that HBO Max and Discovery+ would launch as a single service starting in the summer of 2023. (Variety*)

“Ultimately, bringing all the content together was the only way we could find to make this business viable,” announced JB Perrette, CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming and Games.

It is worth remembering that Warner canceled the release of some productions in recent months, including 'Batgirl'. The film had an investment of US$90 million and ended up being shelved. (Curto news)
